Half A String's new Academy programme is a brand new way to engage and support emerging practitioners and regional venues. In this first iteration we are partnering with Lakeside Arts and are seeking Nottingham-based emerging creatives to train, support and develop as part of our core team on The Snowsmith this Autumn.
Emerging Assistant Producer/Facilitator Half a String are looking for an organised and passionate early career producer to work alongside the Half A String team on our 56 show run of The Snowsmith at Lakeside Arts this December. This role will work on the day to day running of the project, including with marketing and logistical support, as well as working closely with project producer Ione Vaughan and AD Peter Morton. This role also includes assisting our team in the delivery of our 3 schools workshops.
The Snowsmith is a warm family theatre project from Half a String created in 2022 and being redeveloped this year for the Lakeside Arts stage. The story follows inventor Eira on a wild adventure to create snow and unite her town in the cold winter months, with original folk music, a thumping soundtrack, and breathtaking puppetry. We are particularly keen in hearing from Nottingham based emerging practitioners from working class backgrounds. Under Study/Off-Stage Swing Emerging Nottingham Based Performer/SingerHalf a String is looking for an early career energetic actor for The Snowsmith, a folk winter show that is full of heart! This year The Snowsmith will be doing a full winter run from 3rd Dec - 3rd Jan. We are looking for a captivating physical performer ready to throw themselves into understudying 2 tracks in the show. Track 1 is a storytelling multi-role and will require musicality, puppetry skills, ability to embody different characters in the story as well as narrate with clarity and passion. Track 2 is a puppetry led role bringing the Kodi the owl to life as well as goats in the show.

Emerging Assistant DirectorHalf a String are looking for an early career Director to work closely with Peter Morton to assist in the delivery of The Snowsmith in rehearsals. Through this they will gain knowledge of prepping and leading a rehearsal room and ensuring a small cast and understudies are well prepped for the launch of a show. This practical experience will give them working experience of directing a show of this scale.

Emerging Stage Managers
Half a String are looking for 2 early career Stage Managers with good organisational skills and a passion for putting on theatre. The emerging Stage Managers will join our experienced team, receive training in lighting and sound, and be supported to run and operate the running of the show. This will include writing show reports, fixing props when needed and operating sound and lights during the performance.

- To be trained practically in stage management and technical skills
- Taking on the full operation of The Snowsmith through December
- Supporting the Director and Design teams as required
- Liaising with the creative team on technical elements of the show
- Attend production meetings as required
- Managing and organising of props, puppets and costume for the show
